Pyxel Edit, by the way, is also a good choice but I heard the dev' struggle to update because he work on it in his free time, and he don't have a lot ! It's main grudge, against Pyxel Edit notably, is a lack of proper Tileset management but It's in the cart. I'm very far from being a specialist but I couldn't recommend enough Aseprite for spriting as it got a lot of feature, easily accessible and understandable and is constantly updated : I started to learn with it and I had the most fun. Pieces approaching these limits are usually scrutinized for purity. Gameplay mock-ups must not exceed 256 palette colors. It usually does not exceed 64 palette colors. This means no filters, anti-aliased brushes, gradient fills, blend mode overlays, automated color indexing, Frankenstein pixels, compression artifacts, etc.
